We recommend utilizing three pattern pots for a 5" x 5" x 5" pull, making each layer 1.5 inches thick. If you are making a design with an eye, consider four pots with one-inch layers.

What are Pattern Pots?

When pulling murrine, the design can distort over time unless it’s built in sections—what we like to call blocks.

Since glass flows out like a funnel, it’s important to construct separate blocks that account for that movement, especially when working with intricate designs involving eyes or other fine details.

Think of it as designing a pattern bar that expands by approximately 25%. This method helps maintain a consistent design throughout the majority of the pull.

To begin, line the layout blocks with fiber paper, arrange your design, and tack fuse the pieces together. Make sure to secure the two-part pot with wire or use kiln posts/bricks to prevent movement.

Tip: When lining a metal pot, cut the fiber paper to size, join the seams, and place a piece of shelf paper behind the seam for extra protection. We do not recommend using Zyp with these molds as it can flake off and into your design.

These pattern pots are new and improved over our old set (which is getting discontinued) and are used within our book Vitrigraph Design Basics & Beyond.
